Fermo rises on the summit and along the slopes of Colle Sàbulo (319 m asl), probably so called because of its predominantly arenaceous formation (in Latin sàbulum = sand). Colle Sàbulo is dominated by the bulk of the Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta; Porto San Giorgio is 6 km away and Macerata is 40 km away. It is practically equidistant from Ascoli Piceno (67 km) and Ancona (68 km). Piazza del Popolo it is the heart of the city, accurate and linear in its forms, it is bordered upstream and downstream by two imposing sixteenth-century brick arcades. The square houses the oldest public buildings, each with its own architectural characteristics which, however, respect the rigor and uniformity of the square. The square was initially redefined under Alessandro Sforza, due to the arrival in Fermo of Bianca Maria Visconti, wife of her brother Francesco, from the union with whom Galeazzo Maria, future Duke of Milan, was born in 1444.
